Straw Free Summer in Delaware
In late 2017, Plastic Free Delaware launched an outreach program to encourage Delaware restaurants to adopt a voluntary approach of serving biodegradable straws by request only, in other words, not plastic and only if requested by the customer. In less than twelve months, the results have been overwhelming. More than fifty Delaware restaurants (see the growing list below), have adopted this approach and public support has been extraordinary. In short, restaurants and bars that adopt this approach:
- Reduce the amount of plastic which ends up in our environment, reducing the likelihood of harm and death to animals
- Save money even though switching to paper or other biodegradable straws may cost a bit more, the volume being purchased is so much less
- Additionally, they save money on plumbing calls from fewer clogged drains
- Save on inventory space
