Ride for World Health

A journey Across the Nation to Meet Needs Around the World

Columbus, Ohio – Ride for World Health (R4WH) is a cycling team and 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004 and based in Columbus, Ohio, centered around an annual 3,300-mile ride.  This year’s ride, the 11th R4WH has undertaken, began on March 24 in San Diego, California and will finish in Bethany Beach, Delaware on May 14.

R4WH has three goals: Education, Advocacy and Fundraising.  Education is addressed through a coast-to-coast lecture series that reaches students, community members and health professionals in the towns they ride through. The lectures educate on varying topics including health literacy, vaccinations, global health and bike safety.

R4WH strives to engage communities in discussions about their health and the local health concerns they face.  The riders will compile these concerns  as they cross the country and present them to national leaders in Washington, DC to advocate for these communities.

Donations to the R4WH team support the coast to coast lecture series and two beneficiaries that address global health concerns, The Ohio State University Greif Neonatal Survival Program and Esperança.

The Ohio State University Greif Neonatal Survival Program works to improve infant survival in the first few minutes of life in low-income countries.  Through self-sustaining education and training programs that increase the in-country capacity of healthcare workers they continue to save lives long after they leave a country. Esperanca focuses on improving health and providing hope for families in the poorest communities of the world through sustainable disease prevention, education and treatment.  R4WH’s fundraising efforts will support the refurbishing of the “House of Waiting” where expectant mothers in rural Peru, who normally go without care, can deliver their babies in a safe and healthy environment.

The ride makes stops in Phoenix, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Louisville, Columbus, Washington, D.C and many smaller towns. Our riders, comprised of mostly senior medical students, are from across the country and are all passionate about the need for change in both international and domestic health care.  While some are experienced cyclists, others bought their first road bikes in the past few months.

R4WH is sponsored by The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Paradise Garage Bicycles, Mercy Health, Primal, Honey Stinger, Ride with GPS and Northwestern Mutual.
